When you use "abide", it can be used in several situation.
 
1.accept or act in accordance with (a rule, decision, or recommendation).
I abide by the rule of our community.
comply with, obey can be the example of first definition.
Often, "by" follows after this verb in this definition.
 
2. be able to tolerate (someone or something).
"to submit to. agree to"
e.g. to abide by the court's decision.
"to remain steadfast or faithful to
e.g. If you make a promise, abide by it.
tolerate, accept, endure can synonyms of this.
 
Those two examples look similar but, first definition is used for the rules, decisions, or recommendations, which are the abstract concepts. Much hierarchy exists on this term.
